Interesting take on it Slick.
> I've been saying that for a long time. But it seems people are so hell-bent on voting for new music I thought the reverse would be appropriate.

> the thing is, it ain't a democracy Wink. it's chris's station. if you wanted to please everyone, in the end, you would please no one

You make a good point Lab. If the rating does not control anything, what is the use of the rating?I use the ratings to help me pick a song when I'm requesting an artist I'm not that familiar with.

Damn! I keep missing my tunes cuz of phone calls. We are all busting butt, but man the people in this group I am helping need to get a life :x
The ratings dont REALLY mean anything especially when there are haters that just rate everything a 1 regardless. Although we used them for the Labor Day Top 50, which was a cool use.

The uploads are in Chris's control but sometimes he does just go off what we think - just as some of this stuff is new to many it is new to him and if it meant he has to download everything and preview it first before it gets loaded into SAM then a) it would take a long time and b) he would end up with a divorce because that is too much time for a hobby.

The polls off fringe bands is also all in fun...something to talk about.

I am just waiting to see what I can cash in my points for

now that rotten DAD stuff maybe should be pulled but I have played around with SAM on my own and it is darn near impossible to erase content completely. The last Gary Moore (2008?) which was a straight blues album is still in SAM even though it is not available to request and plays like 1 time every 3 months - it is still there.

What Chris can do is "weight" those tracks so they dont get picked by SAM...of course if requested then they will play. Or go the route of the above mentioned Gary Moore and pray it only plays draws a circle at 3AM on a Saturday/Sunday morning.
> Pantera
> Cemetery Gates
> Cowboys From Hell

probably the only pantera song i like...
> One thing is for sure, there is definitely something here for everyone, so if you do not like what is playing, request something else or stick around a bit, I'm sure something you like will come along.

yep, if something is being played that I don't like, I just mute the station for a few (and then usually forget to put the volume back up. lol) and then come back later. :D

that's the good thing about this station, there's such a diversity that there's something for everyone.

as for slick's idea of using the ratings to justify how often the tunes play, i think SAM kinda bases his picks on that. with the result that some songs play so often that people might get bored with a great tune just because it is played too often...

i don't know what the ideal solution is. maybe there isn't one. except, just listen, sit back and enjoy whatever comes up.
Not sure what you guys are calling a "hater". If I hate a song I'm gonna give it a 1 (and I have done so). That's what it's there for, no?
Honestly, this whole things boils down to individual taste. As Dale said, the Fringe Bands discussion was / is fun, and as Sonja said, if a song you don't like comes on, mute it.

I still think this is the best station on the 'Net regardless.

yeah and I've been mentioning that too... you can't fight about tastes - they differ and it's ok that way. how boring would it be if we all liked the same things? and I think it's really too much to label someone a hater just because they rate something that they really don't like a 1. hell, yeah, maybe at that moment the person really does "hate" that song, and as BL said, that's what ratings are for. the next song might be something the person likes and they'll rate it higher. anyhow... i'm outta here. heading to my bf's and towards my b-day... :)
The Last Vegas - Cherry Red (3:13)
(By Request)

From: Whatever Gets You Off

Song was not dedicated

SAM skipped breakfast and gobbled up the final song in my block instead.
Ratings are all subjective, but it's got to be really awful for me to give anything "1".

Terrible vocals, insipid lyrics, bad production, poor musicianship, etc... All those variables would add up to a "1" for me.

I'm not a fan of King Diamond's vocals, but I don't think I've ever given anything by one of his bands a "1". Why? Because the musicianship in his bands is usually pretty damn good.

I'm not a fan of Slayer, but I'm not going rate everything by Slayer a "1". If I listening to the station and I have time to rate a Slayer song I will. Most of the time if something doesn't appeal to me I turn the volume down.

End of rant.

I could not agree more....start to finish this album has enough NEW sound to be their own but shows their roots in the 80's thrash...pass the torch old thrashers the new kings are here!
Dokken - Mr. Scary (4:31)
From: Back For The Attack

Song was not requested

I'm not complaining, but SAM sure is Rockin' with Dokken as of late this is about the 8th or 9th Dokken song I've heard in the last two days. He could find far worse bands to fixate on.

Hey Keir, I didn't see this in que, and grabbed on off the same album. great minds think alike....LOL. Guess my pick will play later this eveing sometime.

Eitherway, killer album :rock_on:
Van Halen - Put Out the Lights (3:35) (By Request)
Pink Cream 69 - Crossfire (4:29) (By Request)

What are the odds? My first two requests of the day get bumped by Turbo picking the same two bands, and in one case, the same song.

well, this friday sure as hell was busy in the town of zurich... now do remember this isn't texas or new york or whatever, it's zurich, switzerland where we don't have shootings and deaths by the dozen or even on a daily basis. but today, not only did I see my first DB but there were 3 other deaths and several smaller traffic accidents - in addition to the usual robbery / theft / break-in kind of stuff... (the one we got called to was pretty ugly. a woman on a bicycle died in a traffic accident, hit by a tramway... dead on the spot, thankfully. there wasn't much of a head left. scrambled...). manic friday here, I tell ya

p.s. how fitting: "now playing:
Overkill
Raise The Dead
Feel The Fire"
hmmm....
