Hey G - that is a constant struggle here that I have...I totally get what you are saying and to a large extent I agree.
It's hard when you have bands like Crashdiet and others that you if you heard back in the day, they would fit right in...As Dale says - we need to promote the bands that are keeping the fire burning..
I'm always open to removing or adding any artists on here...I've usually deferred to including rather than excluding music if it's close to the genre. However that can lead to an inconsistent listening experience at times...
Also, just because it's on the request list doesn't mean it will play, either. For questionable artists, I try to put their rotation weight low so the chance of Sam picking it is low (or non existent). The downside is that users can request these songs. However, that is part of what makes this great - you can discover new music...
There are a fair amount of artists and songs that are really fringe type music on the station - and while it may be on here, it doesn't mean it has to stay on here...
Some folks don't like NWOBHM, some thrash, some glam, etc. It is diverse, maybe too diverse, here...I wonder about some of the progressive music really fitting. Maybe some of the 70s type stuff. Hell, even songs/albums by 80s superstars don't really fit or are worthy (St. Anger?) at times.
What I need everyone to understand is that this is our station. If the majority say they don't like bands X, Y or Z we can remove them. The station and it's music is fluid...
Maybe we need to open a separate thread about music on the station. What needs added in. What needs to go. What can be on here, but be played by request only? I can post a band every day and we debate on whether they should be on here and to what degree(request only, etc) and if there are any specific albums that should be excluded.
What do you think?

So I'm kinda the new guy here and the thing that attracted me to the station was the mix of 80's music and the new stuff. DJ, you mentioned it earlier and I agree I don't want to hear the same song I grew up with ovr and ovr like on Sirius/XM. Deep cuts or whatever you want to call them is cool too but variety! It's the spice of life!

I've got mixed feelings here.
What hooked me to this station was that for once I was able to listen to the 'not-typical' 80s metal bands and discover bands I didn't know about from back in the day. I'll never thank this place enough for the hours of pleasure with the new discovered bands.
Anyway, as Chris says, I think it's right to add new bands when they fit. Otherwise the station would be condemned to die, if no new stuff is ever added. Whether some bands or styles should be here is arguable.

> Isnt that terrible? Having to do a special all 80's day on an 80's station.
Well, what is this station? One that plays music only from the 80s? Or music inspired by the 80s? Or music that sounds like its from the 80s? In my opinion it should be all of the above.
PC 69 is a great example. They had one record in the 80s - 1989. Should they not be on here?
When someone can define what is hard rock or heavy metal, that is when you can decide, without a doubt, what belongs on this station.
Until then, leave it as is.

I've discovered so many "newer" bands here that really fit the '80s mold, that I would not have elsewhere. To wit: Pink Cream 69, Jaded Heart, Gotthard, Sinner. The list goes on. Having said that, I feel that there are albums that were released "back in the day" that do not belong here. Drivin' and Cryin' springs immediately to mind. Unfortunately, we can't keep this an All 80s Station due to the fact that many of those bands no longer exist, or if they do are watered down versions of what they once were, and are not really releasing any new material. There's my two cents.

I like the idea of starting forum topics for individual bands. If nothing else it will spark some interesting discussion.
If there is one common thing that brings in new listeneres, it is discovering new bands, as Xracer And Eva just attested. My take on that is that ???new?? doesn???t have to mean modern. There are thousands of 80s hr/hm releases not on the station, and some of them are really amazing.

I too agree that what drew me to this site was the fact that there were the artists and albums that I grew up with in the 80s available upon request as well as their new albums.
Sure, there are a lot of artists that I don't particularly enjoy listening to, but can appreciate that there are others who DO enjoy them and love the fact that they are available upon request. I too have discovered a lot of new music that I wasn't aware of or forgotten about listening to this site, and for that I am truly grateful.
I think that opening up an evaluation process for bands/albums is a great idea.

Ok, so going back to the topic as the bands issue is being discussed in another thread.
I AM seeing Artillery very soon for the first time, and I am thrilled!! Anyone has seen them (now or back in the day)?
They're playing with Gama Bomb which is a new discovery, pretty cool thrash band and another example of 'current but might as well be an 80s band'.

Every day the automatic pick is amazing, I've bought albums on the back of it.
But I guess it's when the US wakes up (I'm in the UK) the same people just fill the station with hardcore/extreme trash metal. A few songs fair enough but it's almost complete. I wish people couldn't fill the schedule with the same genre. Mix it up please? Typically come 3pm GMT I surf to a different station. Shame as before this, this station is amazing.

I disagree. I hate extreme, hardcore metal, so if it was playing all day I wouldn't listen. However, I am tuned in from 8 AM to 4:30 PM EST every weekday. Sure, there may be some of those tunes once in a while, but surely not all day long.

Looking over the last 20 songs played I only see 5 thrash bands (Metallica, Megadeth, Dark Angel, Sacred Reich, and Aftermath) and only Dark Angel and Aftermath could really be considered extreme or hardcore. Among the other songs there's glam, hard rock, heavy metal, NWOBHM and AOR.

That's usually the norm also. Some of us throw some in here and there and every once in awhile we'll jump on a trash theme bandwagon, but all in all, the thrash/hardcore in any given day is well under 20%.

What gives? That sounded a lot more like "We're An American Band" than "Six String Fever".

Yup! That thrash takes up most of our requests is a ridiculous statement. And you know I love thrash (as well as most of the stuuf here)!
