> This song is based on true occurances that took place during the era of wooden transport vessels. People along some shorelines (NC for example) would construct fake lighthouses to lure ships aground and then they would steal the cargo that came ashore..basically land pirates. Sad thing is, and this is noted in the song, is that many never tried to help the sailors that were injured or drowning trying to escape the wrechage. Thousands lost their lives in this horrific practice before local enforcment put a stop to it per the pressure of mercahants that were losing monies from lost ships, crews and cargo. They would also hang lanterns around the necks of mules and asses (ol??? nags) and set them loose to walk the beach. Ships would think that these lights were other ships, come to close to land and become grounded. That???s where Nags Head in North Carolina got it???s name.
