Hey! After all that Metallica talk, Turbo serves up some classic stuff! Great timing
I hated the song Cherry Pie so much when this came out, I never went out and got this album. I know a few of the hit tunes, and finally got a copy of it (thanks Andie!) but most of it is new to me. This is a pretty cool tune...

I think if you hear the interview with Jani Lane in "Metal" he explains that Cherry Pie was a last minute writting assignment and track demanded by the record company. The album was to be named "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and was done in the can. I heard that and went back and listened to the entire album without Cherry Pie and tossed in the bonus cut from the remaster version and I was awstruck at what a great and totally different album it was meant to be. They would have gone the lines of Skid Row more that Bon Jovi had they just been aloud to put out the album the wanted too.

I did hear that and really wish they had not listened to the corp people and made the song Cherry Pie. It is a great lp without that trash. From what I understand, Jani hates that song to this day - and I agree.
I saw him say the same thing on VH1.

Pieman....I put the cd in the car and skipped right over the first track (Cherry Pie) and so far the album has been excellent, maybe even better than DRFSR. I know a few of the tunes (Uncle Tom' Cabin and I saw Red), but most is unheard to me. The other day it clicked for some reason, that I did not have that album, so Andie sent it to me to check out. Liking it quite a bit! It's a shame the record Corp pushed the crap song.
I also recall Jani in an interview (I think it was on "Heavy-the Story of Metal documentry) saying he was pissed too about that....

I, for one, think Jani Lane is full of it in that interview on VH1. I think he's distorting the truth on that fact. Lyrics on songs like "Bed of Roses", "Love in Stereo", "Mr. Rainmaker, and "I Saw Red", are just as commercial as the "Cherry Pie" title. I think if it had been called "Uncle Tom's Cabin", it wouldn't have made any sense because that was the only heavy metal song on the album. The rest was commercial hard rock. Athough UTC is one of my all-time fave Warrant songs, it seems a bit out of place on that record. Anyone who saw them in '91 like I did, knows that they were very much dialed in to the whole image and commercial rock thing. He was onstage wearing these suspenders and American Flag shorts and it was very much on the Poison/Winger side. I think following the success of "Uncle Tom's Cabin", he then realized he could be a legitimate metal guy, and not a Bret Michael's wannabe. That's why Dog Eat Dog was such a heavy album and he gave up the glam look. That's just my opinion.

I love the album "Cherry Pie" to this day, but my belief is that the record company might have encouraged them to write the song "Cherry Pie" to get a hit, but I doubt the album was ever going to be called "Uncle Tom's Cabin". How would that have tied in to the rest of the material on the album?

Well said, Darryl. I agree with everything you said.

Adding that...I am sure Jani didn't mind all the money from the royalties of that song. He still is probably making money off it. Hey Jani, if you hate it so much, sell the rights or give the money to a charity or something.

Jani is full of it...money and something else

DD
I for one don't mind Cherry Pie (the song)... not any worse than Pour Some Sugar on Me, etc.

HOwever, I agree that the ALBUM is fantastic. It's always been my favorite Warrant album. I could never understand why everyone focused on that one song. How can any 80's fan not get into songs like "You're the Only Hell Your Mama Ever Raised", "Mr. Rainmaker", "Song and Dance Man", "Uncle Tom's Cabin", or "Bed of Roses"?

Jani Lane was the songwriter on that stuff. Jani Lane was a pretty prolific songwriter back in the day. I believe if he had stayed off the booze and kept at it, avoided all the bullshit of the last 10 years, that he could have continued using that songwriting talent.

He always had a great talent in regards to melody. The songs were "pop metalized" but those songs on that album would hold up all alone on an acoustic guitar.

Kip Winger comes to mind with this. He was brutalized because of the band Winger, but any Kip fan knows the awesome songwriter he is. All you have to do is listen to some of his newer stuff to see that. And anyone who has seen Kip live knows that guy can sing the shit off most of the more "respected" singers in the genre. That guy can belt it out, just him and an acoustic guitar and it sounds unbelievable. No effects or loud guitars to hide him and he sounds great.

And you know what? So does Jani when he's not drunk. I've heard him sound bad sometimes live and I think it's because of the alcohol. I say that because I caught him doing a small show for a Guitar Center opening about 3-4 years ago. He did some of the songs just him and an acoustic guitar, and I was surprised at how great he sounded. He was clean at the time and his talent shone through.

Anyway, all this to say that the ALBUM Cherry Pie smokes (just really listen to some of those songs: the structure, melody, etc.) and that Jani could have used that talent for better stuff if he would just have accepted the decline of metal in the early 90's, kept himself clean, and moved on.
> I doubt the album was ever going to be called "Uncle Tom's Cabin"

Gotta disagree with you guys on that. I for one think Uncle Tom's Cabin fits in perfectly with the rest of the album. The only one that sounds a bit out of place is the debated Cherry Pie song, imo.

Also, I distinctly remember reading Warrant interviews before that album came out and they were talking about this new album they were working on called Uncle Tom's Cabin which lends credibility to Jani's story. I also remember reading interviews right about when the album came out about how Cherry Pie was recorded last and the whole album title and theme was changed.

When Jani came out about it recently, it didn't surprise me in the least because it was old news to me...

and yes, the stuff is commercial metal but who the hell cares. If we honestly bagged commercial metal from the 80's era, we'd be getting rid of some our favorite bands.
